Funded initially through the Helen Macpherson Smith Trust in 2005, Big Brothers Big Sisters has established mentoring services in the City of Casey. The area was chosen because of its enormous population growth in the past decade and the emerging needs of young people in Melbourne's Outer South East region.
Since 2005, program income has been sourced through a variety of means including local fundraising, local businesses, community partnerships and philanthropic trusts. Through these fundraising efforts, Big Brothers Big Sisters' mentoring program has a bright future.
Until recently, Big Brothers Big Sisters was based at the Casey ARC facility where it received day-to-day support from the YMCA. In 2009, the program has established its own office in Hallam.
Big Brothers Big Sisters continues to build capacity so it can increase its mentoring services to more young people in the Shire of Cardinia and the City of Greater Dandenong. More than 40 young people living in Melbourne's Outer South East are currently matched to volunteer mentors. However, a further 80 young people are waiting to be matched to a volunteer mentor.
The program is currently recruiting volunteer mentors and establishing mentoring matches for young people.
